Chita de Alcobaça is a printed cotton fabric that originated in India. It was brought to Portugal in the 15th century and became very popular in the following centuries in decorative pieces and clothing all over Europe. The reason for the name “Chitas de Alcobaça” is still a mystery today. Chintz is characterized by its colourful patterns, wide or thin stripes and floral, animal, human or cornucopia motifs.
