The word “sashiko” derives from the Japanese verb “sasu,” which means “to pierce,” “to stitch,” or “to prick.” Sashiko translates as “small stitches,” and although it has evolved into a decorative technique, it began as a method to extend the life of textiles by holding their various parts together. Precious Sardine is decorated with sashiko stitching so that, instead of being grilled, it can be kept as a beautiful and delicate work of art.
Each sardine comes in individual packaging designed to look like newspaper, which also contains a list of the complete collection and a short history of each of the sardines in the collection.
