João de Deus de Nogueira Ramos was born on March 8, 1830 in São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the Algarve. He studied at the Seminary of São Brás de Alportel, where he took the Minor Orders, but with no vocation for the ecclesiastical life, he began his law studies at the University of Coimbra in 1849, which he completed in 1859. During his long academic career, his poetic spirit began to stand out among the bohemian students and he became acquainted with Antero de Quental and Teófilo Braga. Uninterested in practicing law, his activity
turned to journalism, and he collaborated with various periodicals in the southern Portuguese press (1862-1867).
In 1868, he published his poetry in Flores do Campo and was elected to the Cortes as a member of parliament for the Silves constituency, thus settling in Lisbon. In 1869 he resigned as a member of parliament and, after a precarious period, married. In 1876, he published Folhas Soltas and, with the aim of improving the precarious level of literacy at the time, he developed his own innovative reading method, which he called Cartilha Maternal, and which was recognized by the Cortes in 1888. At the end of the 19th century, João de Deus enjoyed enormous popularity and was awarded the insignia of the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada. In 1893, Teófilo Braga compiled his poetry in a publication entitled Campo de Flores. He died in Lisbon, at the age of 65, on January 11, 1896, and is buried in the National Pantheon.
For this edition, 44 compositions were chosen from João de Deus’ lyrical poetry, which is based on a theme of love and serene spirituality.
