Florbela Espanca was born in Vila Vi\u00e7osa on December 8, 1894, from an extramarital relationship, having been declared the daughter of an incognito father in the baptismal register, with the name Flor Bela Lobo. She studied at \u00c9vora, where she stayed until 1912, during which time she began reading classical authors. Before finishing high school, she married fellow student Alberto Moutinho at the age of 19 and began publishing some of her first poetic compositions, which were gathered together in a notebook entitled Trocando Olhares. In 1917 she entered the Faculty of Law in Lisbon. After suffering a miscarriage, she divorced. In 1919, under the guidance of Ra\u00fal Proen\u00e7a, she published her first book of poetry: Livro de M\u00e1goas. After her second marriage, she published Livro de Soror Saudade in 1923, and divorced that same year. She remarried but found no emotional stability, and her health problems worsened with the death of her brother Apeles in 1927; she attempted suicide and died on the night of her thirty-fifth birthday: December 8, 1930. <\/p>\n
Florbela Espanca left us one of the most beautiful sets of sonnets in all of Portuguese literature. Her poetry, of a strongly sentimental and confessional nature, did not seek to integrate any literary movement, but mainly reflected the growing conflict between her loneliness and suffering, and her desire to be happy. This edition includes a selection of 85 sonnets originally published in Livro de M\u00e1goas (1919), Livro de Soror Saudade (1923) and his masterpiece Charneca em Flor (1931). <\/p>\n
