Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis was born on June 21, 1839, on the Livramento hill, Rio de Janeiro. The son of humble parents, he began his studies at a public school but never attended university. At just 15 years old, he published his first poem, Ela, in the newspaper Marmota Fluminense, and in 1856 he joined Tipografia Nacional as an apprentice typographer. At the age of twenty, Assis already had access to the literary and journalistic circles of Rio de Janeiro, and in 1860 he was called to work in the editorial office of the Di\u00e1rio do Rio de Janeiro. In addition to his intense literary activity, Assis held several public positions, having been librarian of the Sociedade Arc\u00e1dia Brasileira (1862) and founding member of Arc\u00e1dia Fluminense (1865). He received the title of Knight of the Order of the Rose in 1867, and the following year he married the Portuguese Carolina Xavier de Novais. In 1897 he became the first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He died in Rio de Janeiro on September 29, 1908. <\/p>\n
Machado de Assis is one of the great names in Brazilian literature. He wrote in the main literary genres, standing out as a prose writer in novels and short stories. His first books of poetry, Cris\u00e1lidas (1864) and Falenas (1870), still denote the influence of the romantic school, but in his last poetic work, Ocidentais (1901), the poet opts for a more reflective and philosophical path that already fits into the realist movement and the perfectionist paradigms of Parnassian poetry. <\/p>\n
